Life as I Know it.

11/15

Paper Route, 3rd and Lindsley, 8 p.m., $10

11/16

YelaWolf, Cannery Ballroom, 9 p.m., $24

Space Capone, Mercy Lounge, 9 p.m., $10

11/17

Dr. Dog, Marathon Music Works, 8 p.m., $22

Personally, I am ready for this weekend. Thanks to AEG Live, I scored free tickets to the YelaWolf concert this Friday. Also, my current favorite Dr. Dog is playing Saturday night, I won’t be surprised if I end up spending money on that show as well. This weekend I have four “must see shows”. Here they are:

11/15

Paper Route- These guys are a local band whom all met in college at Greenville College. In 2006 they released their first album and Paste Magazine recently called them an “artist to watch”. Paper Route is playing 3rd and Lindsley in order to warm up for their upcoming tour with Switchfoot. If I had to compare these guys live show to another band I would say they are similar to a very miniature Coldplay.

11/16

YelaWolf- Alright, I need to admit something. I’m not a huge rap fan but something inside me enjoys a good gangster rap. YelaWolf is one of those rappers, and I’m actually going to see this show on Friday. Michael Wayne Atha better known as YelaWolf, is from Gadsen Alabama. Growing up he began to embrace what he calls his “white trashness” and has run with it. YelaWolf is a 20 something Alabama native who isn’t afraid to offend people. If you are to attend this show be ready for a different experience then most shows you attend.

Space Capone- Dance music and crazy lights, this local talent has it all. I have been able to see Space Capone about three times in the past and each show has been great. With more and more exposure on the music scene as time goes on, Space Capone’s live show keeps getting more and more professional. Mercy Lounge is the place and space Capone is the name, you won’t regret seeing this show.

11/17

Dr. Dog- Currently the band I listen to most is Dr. Dog. These guys bring so much energy to each song that I can’t help but love them. These Philadelphia natives have been playing together since middle school, and you can hear the experience and teamwork musically. Live I have seen these guys 3 times, and each time has been one of my best live music experiences. On tour to support their newest album “Be the Void”, Dr. Dog is a band that is at the top of their game, and you need to see them live.

So there is this weeks “must see shows”, let me know in this weeks poll which show you would prefer seeing.

Music listeners how are you? Did anybody go see Heypenny last weekend? If not, it is ok I’m sure they will be playing soon. Reviews from their show were great and I have a feeling they will soon see some serious publicity. Moving into this weekend’s live music, I have picked out five shows that I consider “Must See Shows”. So here they are, and make sure to vote at the end to let us know which one you think you’d be the most enjoyable.

11/7
Citizen Cope, Marathon Music, 8 p.m., $22
Lindsey Buckingham, War Memorial, 8 p.m., $50-$100
11/8
Joshua Radin, Marathon Music, 8 p.m., $22
11/9
Donavon Frankenreiter, 3rd and Lindsley, 8 p.m., $20
Y2K, High Watt, 10 p.m., FREE

11/7

Citizen Cope– Clarence Greenwood better known as Citizen Cope is known for being a New Yorker. Little do people know he is actually a Tennessean. Born in Memphis Clarence has been touring professionally for the past ten years. His genre of music is best classified as acoustic soul. Currently Citizen Cope is on their tour promoting their sixth and most recent album One Lovely Day.

Citizen Cope will play Marathon Music Works Thursday night.

Lindsey Buckingham– Lead guitarist and vocalist for world famous Fleetwood Mac, Lindsay will be making a solo stop in Nashville this Thursday. 1998 Rock-n-Roll hall of famer Buckingham will hit the stage of War Memorial playing some of his own as well as Fleetwood Mac hits. Growing up with parents who are both big Fleetwood Mac fans, I know the level of talent that this man has and it will be a great show.

11/8

Joshua Radin– If you watch Greys Anatomy or any other dramatic TV show, chances are you have heard some of Radins music. Hailing from Ohio, Radin is a mellow singer/songwriter whose acoustic sound brings great and catchy melodies.

11/9

Donavon Frankenreiter– Former surfer Frankenreiter was sponsored by Billabong at an early age. With his sponsor he was able to travel the world catching waves. During his travels he would meet a Hawaiian named Jack Johnson. This friendship would grow into a musical combination. Donavon if you can’t tell is a surfer singer/songwriter whose chill rhythms are much like his counterpart Jack Johnson. I have been able to see Frankenreiter before and his band was very talented. Also his concerts are full of fun energy and jam breaks.

Y2K– Also, do not forget about Y2K dance party at the High Watt. This can serve as you perfect end to a Saturday night. Hey, it’s FREE!

According to the twitter Skrillex tweeted saying “Nashville is on fire” last saturday night. Reviews of Skrillex and Pretty Lights two night event has been posted on http://www.nashvillescene.com and they gave the show two thumbs up. With cold weather showing up for the first time of the year last weekend, outdoor shows such as Musicians corner didn’t have the turnout that they had been used to seeing all season.

This weekend the cold weather is still here and it doesn’t look like the weather brought a wide variety of “must see” shows. After gathering info on all the shows this weekend I could only bring myself to writing about 3 shows. Having said that, here is this weeks “must see” shows.:

11/3
-Heypenny, Brick Factory, 8 p.m., $10

11/4
-Muscians Corner, 3rd and Lindsley, 7 p.m., $8
-Kendrick Lamar, War Memorial, 8 p.m., $25 and up

11/3
Heypenny-  Ok so you probably have yet to hear about this local band unless you have caught one of their shows around town. Lets say you mixed together the sounds of MGMT, Mika, and FUN, that is how I would describe their sound. They have opened for KE$HA on tour once and hey are slowly gaining recognition. Saturday at 8 they will be at the Brick Factory at Cummings Station so come out and hear what all the noise is about.

Locals HEYPENNY are headlining their own show this Saturday

11/4
Musicians Corner– To end the year for Musicians corner they are having a release party for the album they have put together. There are a bundle of great musicians getting ready t take the stage this sunday. Colorfeels, Nathan Angelo, and Robby Hecht are just a few of the performers gearing up for Sundays show. This will be the last musicians corner until the spring so try to head over and catch a glimpse of the last one. Downside to this is that it is not free, it will be $8.

Kendrick Lamar– From Compton, California Kendrick Lamar is only 24 years of age but climbing the Hip-Hop charts. When Lamar was a kid he witnessed his idols Dr. Dre and Tupac filming their music video for “California Love”, this was a pivotal moment in his life. Lamar has been gaining recognition internationally over the last 3 years. The first time I had heard of him was after his Bonnaroo set this past year. He is currently sitting on his third album and touring presently to support that album. Lamar has been compared to NAS, Eminem, and Jay-Z. Hid favorite rappers are Notorious B.I.G and Tupac. War Memorial is hosting his show this weekend, show starts at 8 with an opener beforehand.

Kendrick Lamar

Music fans, take note and try to go support live music this weekend. I know it might not be the best lineup this weekend but there is always something good going on in Nashville. Here’s another poll so go ahead and choose which of these acts you would choose to see live this weekend.

Last weekend if anyone was able to go see some shows let me know all your reviews. I was anticipating the Temper Trap performance last week for a while. Arriving at the venue at 9:30 p.m. we could hear the opener wrapping up their set. They didn’t waste any time setting up the stage and starting the show. Their latest single “London’s Burning”, is what they started with. Immediately the lights were queued perfectly with the sound. With fog machines on full and lights going crazy, Temper trap seemed to cover every song on their two albums. The only thing I would have changed about their set was that they left out one of my favorite songs “Down River”. Aside from that it was all great, including Dougie (lead singer) coming into the crowd and dancing with fans. After their finale which included their hit song “Sweet Disposition”, I was lucky enough to chat with the Bass player for an hour or so. These guys were great even off the stage. All in all this show was one of the all-time best for me.

Pictures I put together from my Temper Trap concert experience.

Other shows from last week apparently went very well, including Die Antwoord. I was more than curious to check and see how this show ended up. Reviews were all thumbs up. Asking around you will hear about some crazy and raunchy things that were going on during their show, but everyone seemed to have had a blast.

This weekend Nashville is preparing for some big crowds. With Skrillex, Pretty Lights, and Nas all hitting the stage at Riverfront, expect loud noises from downtown.

So here we are with this week “Must See Shows”.

10/25

Xavier Rudd, Exit/In, 8:00 p.m., $20

Silversun Pickups, Marathon Music Works, 9:00 p.m., $22

10/26

With Your Friends, Riverfront Park, 4-11 p.m., $45

Full Moon Picking Party, Percy Warner Park, 7-11 p.m., $20: Adults (16 and up) $10 (7-15) $5 if you bring an instrument

10/27

Musicians Corner, Centennial Park, 2 p.m., Free

With Your Friends, Riverfront Park, 4-11 p.m., $45

10/25

Xavier Rudd- Ever met a man who can play lap guitar, Didgeridoos, harmonica, drums, and bass at the same time? Well if not you can on Thursday at Exit/In. Xavier Rudd is an Australian with a big heart for the environment, Australia, and music.  Playing what some call Australian folk music, Xavier travels the world showing crowds a good fun time. His shows encourage dance and celebration. I was able to see Xavier Rudd in Australia. This guy really knows how to have a fun show. You won’t be disappointed.

Silversun Pickups- With their name deriving from the name of a hometown Liquor Store, these LA natives are ready to play Nashville. Formed in Los Angeles in 2002, these four rockers are stopping during their tour in support of their most recent album “Neck of the Woods”. This is sure to be a great show, especially if they play their most notable song “Panic Switch”.

10/26

With Your Friends- I would venture to say this two night event is the biggest thing to happen to the electronic music scene in Nashville ever. With two of today’s biggest DJs, this will be a party. Skrillex and Pretty Lights are two of the most known electronic producers in the world and both are set to play Friday and Saturday. Also on Friday Santigold(female rapper/singer), who has been compared to M.I.A, will play as one of the openers. Gates open at 3 p.m. and shows start at 4.

Promotional print for With Your Friends

Full Moon Picking Party- Why I have yet to make a post about this event yet I can’t answer. This week is the last Full Moon Picking Party of the year. What this even consist of is circles of bluegrass and folk players picking the night away. Aside from some headline acts on the main stage, most music is done in the player circles. Admission is only $5 if you bring a bluegrass instrument such as a guitar. Other information can be found on their website at http://www.friendsofwarnerparks.com/pickingparty.html.

10/27

Musicians Corner- Alright friends, this is the second to last weekend for Musicians Corner. So, if you have yet to go and catch some of this free music, you’ll only have one more chance after this weekend.

With Your Friends- The second night of the With Your Friends festival will be on Saturday. It will have the same headliners as the previous night but NAS (Hip-Hop superstar) will be showing up as an opener. This will be a pretty high energy and crazy show, so if you’re heading downtown make sure you’re prepared.

Alright folks, we have plenty of variety this weekend. From old school bluegrass to new school electronic. Decided which one you would prefer to see this weekend and vote in this week’s pole.

Music City Monitor is pleased to announce a great set of shows for this lovely fall weekend. Although you might need to reach into your pocket for some shows, I assure you it will be worth it.

First off, let me apologize because last week I discouraged your attendance at Live on the Green. After hearing reviews I admit I was wrong. Here Come the Mummies reportedly put on an amazing show. Upon hearing this I researched them and found that HCTM’s are actually a band whose identities are not revealed due to contract reasons. Rumor is that they all have earned Grammys in some fashion, but no one knows who they actually are. So, I apologize for my harsh judgment last week.

Looking forward to the weekend ahead, we have heaps to cover, so let’s hit it. Here is this weeks “must see” shows:

10/18

Temper Trap, Marathon Works, 8 p.m., $24

Perpetual Groove, Exit/In, 9 p.m., $12 pre-sale and $15 at the door

10/18

Die Antwoord, Marathon Music Works, 8 p.m., $22

Rufus Wainwright and Elliot Jacobson, Ryman Auditorium, 8 p.m., $30-$40

10/19

Musicians Corner, Centennial Park, 2 p.m., FREE

Y2K, High Watt, 11 p.m., FREE

10/18

Temper Trap- Let me start off by saying that I bought my tickets to this show back in July. This Australian band began in Melbourne in 2007 and has been slowly gaining international recognition. Their most recognizable single “Sweet Disposition” became popular after its play in the movie “500 Days of Summer” and a Coke commercial. Since then these guys have toured with bands such as Mumford and Sons and played internationally. Temper Trap is now on their North American tour promoting their new self-titled album. According to ticketmaster.com their concert review average is a 4.5 out of 5. There shows have been compared to that of U2 and Arcade Fire. Temper Trap will hit the stage after the opener called Neighborhood. I’ll be there ready to welcome these guys from Down Under. Will you?

Temper Trap will make their first official Nashville apperance this Thursday night at Marathon Music Works

Perpetual Groove- In 1997 this jam band now known as Perpetual Groove (Pgroove), began their journey together in Savannah, Georgia. PGroove incorporates a blend of traditional Southern rock, funk, jazzy improvisation, indie rock and synth loops. Having seen these guys twice before, I can honestly say that it will be a good time. From start to finish it is a full set with no breaks. They do a wonderful job of transitioning into each song the whole night. Yes if you go you can expect a crown of hippies, frat guys, and some hipsters but all will be having a great time. Tickets are $12 pre-sale and $15 at the door of the Exit/In.

10/19

Die Antwoord-  The meaning of the word “Die Antwoord” in Afrikaans is “The Answer”. These South Africans might be “The Answer” to your Friday night. Die Antwoord raprave group whose style draws from the Zef counter-culture movement. Zef music is a South African style of Hip-hop that uses both English and Afrikaan language. This concert will surely be an interesting almost cultural experience. Die Antwoord who have been on tour with American DJ Diplo have been known to do some pretty off the walls things live. So brace yourself if you want to attend. It will surely be an experience you will never forget. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Marathon Music Works, with an opener beforehand.

Die Antwoord will play their unique music at Marathon Works this Saturday

Rufus Wainwright– Rufus Wainwright is an American-Canadian singer songwriter who has been in the music business quite some time. Now on tour promoting his album produced by DJ Mark Ronson, he will be stopping in at the Ryman for an intimate set of music this Friday. Not only will you be seeing Rufus Wainwright if you attend, but you can catch the opener, Ingrid Michelson. Michelson is a female singer songwriter who is known for her almost quirky smooth pop acoustic style. This will be a great show at a great venue. Show starts at 8 and tickets range from $30- $40.

10/20

Musicians Corner- This week is the third to last Musicians Corner of the season, and what better time for free music in the park than when the leaves are changing color. I have never heard of any of the bands this week but the headliner is a band called “The Steel Drivers”. Should be a great time with great music and great food. So grab a blanket and some friends and head to Centennial Park for this FREE event.

Y2K- If you get toward the end of your Saturday and you are still looking for something exciting head over to the High Watt at 11 p.m. There you will find DJ Coach on the turntables firing off some great dancing beats. This is a great way to dance the night away, for FREE.

Alright there you have it, this weeks “Must See Shows”. Let me know on the poll below which one you will most likely be attending. Go have a great weekend Nashville, and soak up the great music scene.

Hello again music lovers. I’m hoping that you all went and experienced some great shows last week! If not it’s OK because there is always more to come here in Nashville.

Personally I didn’t get to make it out to any shows last week due to being a groomsman in my best friend’s wedding. But hey, the wedding band was great! If I was to review them I would give them an A. Just like ant wedding reception, they hit up get oldies like Shout, Brown Eyed Girl, and even Wagon Wheel. But now let’s get to the real bands.

One of my dearest friends went out to musician’s corner and reported to me that Phil Keaggy shredded on the stage. Also my friend went to Live on the Green and got us a good picture. He had this to say, “I have no idea how Trampled by Turtles keep up with their tempo the way they did, it was awesome.” So there are two reviews of last week’s shows. Let me know if any of you readers out there went to any shows and have a review. I’d love to post it.

^Trampled by Turtles at Live on the Green last Thursday night^

THIS WEEK:

I feel like since starting the blog that I have never said what I’m about to say. But here it goes; this week is somewhat lacking. The amount of great shows is not really there this week. Thankfully the amazing Grace Potter is headlining two nights at the Ryman to give us something to look forward to. Well anyway here is this weeks must see shows:

10/11

Joe Pug, High Watt, 8pm, $10

Live on the Green (Scream on the Green), Public Square,  6:45pm, $0

10/12

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Ryman, 8pm, $30-100

Grace Potter is set to hit the Ryman Friday and Saturday night

10/13

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Ryman, 8pm, $30-100

-Musicians Corner, 2pm, Centennial Park, $0

Y2K, High Watt, 11pm, $0

Oktoberfest, Germantown, 10am, $0

10/11

Joe Pug– Joe Pug with his guitar in hand and harmonica strapped around his neck will be hitting the High Watt Thursday night. Joe has a very folky almost Bob Dylanish style to him. If I’m free Thursday night I will be heading to the High Watt. It’s only ten bucks and it’s a great way to spend the night.

Live on the Green– Alright this is the final week of Live on the Green, or should I say Scream on the Green. Yep they are calling it Scream on the Green and giving it a Halloween theme this week. To go along with the theme there will be costume contests and other events taking place outside of all the music. Alright now about the music. This week’s headliner is Here Come the Mummies. This band is what I would call a goofy themed band. Their songs are almost laughable, but I’m sure their stage presence is something interesting for them to be headlining. I’ll be honest I probably won’t be out on public square this week, but hey, it’s free and could be fun.

10/12

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals– Ok Grace is going to be our saving grace this weekend. By a long shot this is the “must see” this week. Originally from Vermont, Grace Potter is a singer-songwriter who attended St. Lawrence University. On this campus she met who she now calls her band mates. Their newest single “Stars”, can be heard pretty regularly on Lightning 100. This girl can “sang” as well as write in a very individual way. So do yourself a favor this week and although it is a bit on the expensive side, it is at the Ryman, and it will be amazing.

10/13

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals– Grace will be playing again on Saturday night due to such high demand.

Musicians Corner– Ok so do any of you remember the 90’s ballad “kiss me”? If so, have you ever wanted to stand in the park and sing it with a crowd of people? Well if any of this sounds desirable head over to Centennial Park around 2:00 to see it happen. Sixpence None the Richer (artist behind “Kiss Me”) will be headlining the show. Should be a great day, and the weather seems to be playing out nicely for Saturday.

Y2K– Alright it seems like there is not much going on this weekend as far as live music, and you might be right. But head over to the High Watt around 11pm on Saturday and for free you can dance your frustrations away. This electronic dance party will have a worry free for a few good hours.

Oktoberfest– Ok I know this event might not be centered on music but there is music there and it is free. Head up to Germantown in north Nashville Saturday for a day of Polka music, brats, and heaps of good vibes. Also Germantown is a real cool part of town, and this is a great way to experience it.

Alright take your pick. Once again I’m going to put up a poll and you all are going to get to choose which you would prefer to attend. Also next week I can smell some great shows coming up. I even have a ticket to one show already. So stay in touch for next week’s post!

Greetings fellow Music Lovers,
I come to you after some great shows last week. First let me apologize for not updating yall on the shows that were coming this past weekend because they were amazing. But what I can do is fill you in on all that I was able to take part in this past week.

Last Week Review- Live on the Green, Nick Waterhouse

My musical weekend started Thursday night at Live on the Green. This week was the most anticipated line-up I had ever heard of for Live on the Green. To start the night off me and some friends arrived early around 5:30. We had heard they were preparing for a crowd of 20,000 attendees. After hearing this we knew we had to get there early to get a good spot. After about an hour the first band hit the stage. Fly Golden Eagle; a local electronic grunge rock band started their set with a song featuring some fiery saxophone and keys. Fly Golden Eagle is a band that has recently been gaining exposure and hitting the festival circuit with appearances at Bonnaroo and other festivals. These guys from the east side of Nashville (including a Lipscomb graduate, Richard Harper), started the night better than most any local band could. Next band on stage was the local former Belmont students, The Apache Relay. With this being their second Live on the Green they were seasoned and ready to go. You could tell the maturity they had gained due to their recent touring with bands such as Dawes and Mumford and Sons while they entertained what now seemed like 10,000 people in the crowd.
Once their set ended everyone knew what was next. The Alabama Shakes were setting up. This time last year I don’t think anyone in the crowd even knew who these guys were, but you better believe they did last Thursday. Finally after what seemed like forever, they hit the stage with their hit song “Hold On”. It seemed like everyone there was dancing and singing along. After about 5 songs I looked at my phone and Lightning 100(local radio station) had tweeted a picture form the stage showing the enormity of the crowd. It seemed like the whole city was enjoying this night together. What an amazing night. This was a concert I never wanted to end. And as critical as my view on shows are, I must say, this was one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Local Band Apache Relay sets the bar high right before headliner The Alabama Shakes hit the stage

The next two days I spent almost recovering from how amazing Thursday night was. But come Sunday I was ready to go see an act I had heard a lot about but had never seen live. Nick Waterhouse from LA was rolling into the High Watt on Cannery Row and I was not going to miss it. Waterhouse resembles a Buddy Holly appearance with a big band sound. This show had an opener named the Allah Las. All I can say about them was… well…. Nothing really, they were below par.
After the opener, there was what seemed to be a break that was longer than necessary. Finally Nick Waterhouse came out with his slick looking band. They wasted no time and started rocking in their own individual way. From the first to last song it was a dance party, and I loved it. A few notes were hit by Nick and his female background singer that left the crowd with nothing to do but cheer. Overall great show but part of me felt as though Nick was to up tight with his music and band. I love when I can see the whole band loose and having a great time.

Comin up this week:

Ok ok enough reminiscing for now. Let us move ahead to what’s to come this week in our great city. Alright here’s my list of “must see shows” for the week with time and location.

10/4- Live on the Green(6:30 Public Square)
10/5- First Aid Kit (8:00 3rd and Lindsley), Belle X1 (9:00 Basement), Hustle Dance Party(10:00 Cannery Ballroom), The Weeks (9:00 High Watt)
10/6- Musicians Corner (1:00pm Centennial Park), JD McPherson (9:00 Mercy Lounge)
10/7- The Shins (7:00 Ryman Auditorium)

Now first let me say that these are not the only shows going on in this great Music mecca called Nashville. But if I had the time or money to go to all the shows I wanted, these are my selections.

10/4-
Live on the Green- Ok this Thursday we have the 5th lineup for Live on the Green. This week the headliner is folk band Trampled by Turtles, opened by Honey Honey and The Kingston Springs. Trampled by Turtles although I have never seen them live I do thoroughly enjoy their most recent album. So head out to the Public Square and give these guys a listen. Why not? It’s FREE!

10/5-
First Aid Kit- Well this is an band that I have firsthand knowledge of. I was able to see First Aid Kit at Lollapalooza in Chicago this past August. In my opinion the setup at 3rd and Lindsley will cater much more to their sound than the big festival stage I saw them on in august. With a list of songs consisting of mostly ballads, these Swedish sisters are great writers and tell stories very well through their songs. It will be interesting seeing them in Nashville considering they have apparently been spending time here with Jack White who has taken interest in their music.

Belle X1- Ok I’ll be upfront with you guys, all I know of this band is they are an indie rock band form Ireland. I heard them on Pandora a year or so ago and they have stuck with me. So knowing that here is my opinion. This show would be hit or miss. But hey it’s an act that rarely makes a visit to music city so it’s worth a shot.

Hustle Dance Party- Do you like to Dance? If your answer even resembles yes, then you should think about heading out to the Cannery Ballroom Friday. This event is being put advertised as the years biggest dance party. Well considering the DJ lineup consist of Coach, DJ Rate, Reno Bo, and Jacob Jones; the DJs from Nashville’s most successful parties, I think they could be correct. So get ready to rave and let loose on the dance floor this Friday night! http://mercylounge.com/calendar/venue/cannery/2012/10/05/hustle-the-biggest

-dance-party-of-the-year/

The Weeks- Ok these Mississippi rockers seem to be playing shows all over the city. Recently signed with the Kings of Leon label “Snakes and Serpents”, these guys are getting plays everywhere including our local radio station Lightning 100. The High Watt is where these guys will grace the stage this Friday. So head on down and see this band before they hit it big and you can no longer afford to see them.

10/6-
Musicians Corner- Ok I know we have been over how cool this thing is. So if you have yet to go out and see a Musi

cians Corner, go out this Saturday and catch it before the season ends. For this Saturday I have a question: Who has ever heard of Phil Keaggy? Well I have, and Jimi Hendrix knew him too. When Hendrix appeared on The Tonight Show he was asked, “how does it feel to be the greatest guitar player in the world?”, his response was “I don’t know youd have to ask Phil Keaggy”. Ok now that should be enough bio on this Mr. Keaggy fellow. Phil will be headlining along with his guitar at musicians corner this Saturday. So once again get a blanket and head to the park for some FREE world class music.

JD McPherson- Once an art teacher in Chicago this newly swing/big band frontman changed to the music industry. I was not lucky enough to head out to 3rd and Lindsley in July when he was last in town but lucky for me it was a live broadcast on the radio so I heard it all. This guy will have you jumoing and jiving the whole night. Click this link to his single “Northside Gal” to get an idea of just how much swing he offers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZGn4LncY0g

10/7-

The Shins- Welp, hate to say this but this one is sold out folks. So unless you can find a scalper or a craigslister willing to give up their ticket, you’re out of luck. But I will say that having seen these guys this past summer, they truly do put on a nice show. And to see them at the historic Ryman Auditorium would be a sight to see.

Here it is once again folks. This weeks rundown. And to end this post I have a little poll for you. Simply decide which of these Live performances looks most interesting to you and click vote.

Welp… here we are again sitting on the cusp of another amazing lineup of shows in Nashville. I feel like im repeating myself every week but it’s true; Nashville has the best music scene in the country.

First of all let me give a few reviews of last weekends top moments. I was up and going Saturday morning after a night of work all Friday night. But what Saturday had in store for me as far as live music was worth getting up for. My day started with a good lunch then picking up my picnic blanket and heading to Centennial Park for the FREE musicians corner. Upon arrival I heard a familiar bands sound playing. It was the sound of Carolina Story, a husband and wife duo with an acoustic folk sound. I’d heard them before but this time it was like they were more in gear then ever before. Right after the last song I noticed the one and only Sam Bush setting up. Sam Bush is known as one of the best Mandolin players whose ever lived. Before his first strum you could see the crown beginning to liven up with anticipation. And once he was introduced and hit the stage, the crowd inched their way toward the legend. Mr. Bush did nothing less then force jaws to hit the ground. His musicianship and song selection was all beyond professional. This man knows how to perform. My favorite bit of the performance was his Beatles covers. So yes, go see Sam Bush if you have the opportunity, it is mindblowing.
After Musicians Corner my friends and I headed to watch the depressing Tennessee vs. Florida game. Once I had cried away my sorrows, I headed toward the new Marathon Music Works venue to see Beach House grace the stage. Arriving at the venue was a great feeling. When you know the room will soon be crowded with people and you see the biggest ceiling fans you have ever seen, you know you’re lucky. This means sweating wont be too much of an issue.
Not long after grabbing a spot near the stage, the opener Daniel Wong came out. His solo performance with nothing but a guitar and no vocals was strange but entertaining. After about two of his songs we were able to see his musical talent but were ready to move on to Beach House.
About 20 minutes after his exit, the lights dropped and multiple fog machines turned on. Beach House was headed out on stage. From the start to end there was not an unentertaining section. Luckily they played most all of their hit songs off of my favorite album :Teen Dream”, and even some really old songs I had never heard. Overall the climax in my opinion was when they played one of my favorite songs “10 Mile Stereo” right before their encore. They played it better then I’d heard before. After their encore the lights came up, the fog settled and we left with a great experience under our belts. Not a bad opinion was heard during our exit.
Saturday was a musical success!

Ok! Now, lets look forward. And when we do so it looks very bright. This weekend has alot going on so lets hit it.

Thursday:
Well here we are with round three of Nashville’s free music festival Live on the Green! This week we have The Missing Cats(consisting of former Widespread Panic band members) opening for North Mississippi All-Stars. This should be a night filled with bluesy funk and plenty of gritty dancing numbers. Expect steel guitar and musical numbers that jam for a while. Head on over to Public Square right in front of Davidson County Courthouse for a good time, for FREE!
Another show that is going to get heated up a bit later on in the night is Ty Segall at the Zombe Shop. Having been to a show here before it is bound to be a crazy experience. Zombie Shop is an old car garage that still doesnt look too much like a concert venue, but thats the beauty of it. Expect a rowdy crowd and a party if you’re heading down to Zombie Shop.

Friday:
Zac Brown Southern Ground Festival gets underway on friday and it’s sure to be this weekends big event. They are hosting the festival at the newly redone Riverfront Park. Fridays acts include: Amos Lee, Jerry Douglas, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Zac Brown, and more. Also John Mayer has been added to the list as of this week! Tickets for one day passes are on sale for 50 dollars on ticketmaster.com
Although most of the attention will be given to the Zac Brown Festival, Umphreys McGee is hitting the legendary stage at the Ryman Auditorim with their upbeat anthems and particular sound.
Another show is Maps and Atlas, playing at Mercy Lounge. This is a band I would love to head out and see this weekend. I keep hearing the coolest reviews on them. They have opened for bands like Ra Ra Riot and Portugal the Man. They hail from Chicago and have been touring for a good 4 years now. So we will see how nashville takes to their sound Friday night.

Saturday:
Rounding out the Zac Brown Festival, they have an amazing all-star lineup this saturday. Here is who is on the bill to perform: David Gray, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Lumineers, and more. I must say… that is an amazing line-up. If only if only I had 50 dollars. O well maybe if I stand on the pedestrian bridge I can hear bits and pieces of the shows?
Well, for those of you out there with nothing in your wallet like me, head over to Centennial Park again! Musicians Corner is heating up again. Kenny Vaughn is headlining and although I have never heard of him Im sure it will be a great show, because it always is. So once again, take your blankets, dogs, and picnics to Centennial Park for another week of great FREE music!
Another band I have heard bits and pieces of is The Electric Hearts. And what I have heard is interesting and it captures you. Lucky for you they are playing in Nashville Saturday night at The Basement. Head over to their site and get a listen, if you like it go out and support them.
Something I have yet to blog about but I love to attend occasionally is Y2K. Every Saturday night at The High Watt(newer venue above Cannery Ballroom), there is a place to dance the night away. For FREE. Every week new DJ”s and bands come to show their stuff and you get to dance to all of it. Doors open at 11pm and your wallets dont open. Remember it’s FREE.

OK Nashville once again you have the rundown of all the best live music. So yet again, you have no reason to say “Im bored, and there is nothing to do!” There is something to do. Pick one of these to go see and then reply and tell us how it was. Which of these looks most appealing to you this week?

Baltimore based duo Beach House is set to perform this weekend at Marathon Music Works.

If you are thinking my title is sarcastic, let me give you my reasoning for the title:

9/12-9/15 Americana Festival
9/13 Live On the Green
9/15 Beach House
9/15 East-Centric Music Festival
9/15 Musicians Corner

Now do you believe me?

Not only is this a busy week of live music in Music City, it’s an important one as well. The Americana Festival is here in town with concerts being given all over the city, including the Americana Award Show at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Live on the Green is firing up its second week of events. Indie duo Beach House is in town on Saturday night at Nashville’s newest live venue Marathon Works. East Nashville bands are bringing out their best for East-Centric Music Festival Saturday. Not to mention the rapidly growing Musicians corner that will be set-up in Centennial Park Saturday afternoon. Yes… I know that is a lot to take in so let’s rundown each one individually:

Americana Music Festival- Your first question might be: What is Americana Music? The Americana Genre is a type of music that can be best described as Roots Music. It is a mixture of folk, bluegrass, blues, country, and acoustic music. Just to name a few artists considered to be under this umbrella are: Avett Brother, Bonnie Raitt, and Punch Brothers. This week’s festival gives the artist a chance to come showcase their talents along with fellow artist. At the Ryman Auditorium they will be holding the annual Americana Award Show this week. With all the live shows occurring in almost all the Nashville music venues your probably wondering who all is playing and where. Well to answer those questions visit the Americana Music website for times, locations, descriptions, and other information. http://americanamusic.org/about-festival/

Live on the Green- Thursday the 13th “Live on the Green” kicks off another week of free music at Public Square Park starting at 6pm. This week has an Americana Music theme featuring The Dunwells, Delta Spirit, and The Wallflowers. San Diego based band “Delta Spirit” is a band I have seen before and they have a great mix of folk, blues, surfer rock, and even electronic sounds that give them a great live performance. Headlining band “The Wallflowers” are a band you might have heard before. They have recently ended a short hiatus with a new album. The band was originally formed in 1989 with front man Jakob Dylan (son of the infamous Bob Dylan). Last week I headed out to Live on the Green and was more than pleased with the production. This week should be no different. Moon Taxi and Dr. John both blew the crowd away having them dancing the night away on the Public Square plush green grass. So head on down to the show tonight, take off your shows and enjoy a night of FREE live music. www.liveonthegreen.com

Beach House- I am pleased to announce that this Saturday night I will be there to experience this concert live and in person. I have been awaiting this show for a while now. Beach House is a band based out of Baltimore, Maryland and has recently released their 4th album titled “Myth”. Their Indie Electronic sound is one that is easy to get lost in and have no desire to be found. Opening for beach house is a solo artist named Dustin Wong. I’m not too sure about much on him but the clip I heard was a very electronic sound. I will be sure to fill you guys in on how it goes afterward. But for those of you wanting to head out and see them, the show is Saturday Sept. 15th at Marathon Works. Tickets are still available here: http://www.ticketfly.com

EastCentric Music Fest- Saturday in East Nashville head over to hear what Rolling Stone has called “An Underground Sensation Sweeping the Country”. With East Nashville’s music scene making headlines all over, what better time to head over and check it out first hand. Alongside the free music you can go see local art and experience local food and brewery trucks and stands. Also. For more info head over to http://www.east-centric.com/ and head over to the east side on Saturday.

Musicians Corner- Every Saturday this fall in Centennial Park Local bands, singers, and songwriters perform for free in an intimate setting. This week will also have an Americana Music based theme. The music starts at 3 and ends at 6. Outside of the music there are food trucks, a wine garden, and other activities for the family (not to mention you are in Centennial Park). For more info click on http://musicianscornernashville.com and enjoy a relaxing day of FREE live music on the park.

So there it is. Your weekend is full of options… and most are FREE. Which of these sounds most appealing to you this weekend?
